Today I spent a good amount of time sitting outside reading the London Review of Books, and there was an excellent review of Pevear and Volokhonsky's translation of War and Peace. Purchase your copy of Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky's new translation of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace and King Vidor's slight but nonetheless entertaining film of adaptation at Amazon.com. I bought the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation for the Kindle because my ancient Penguin copy has a small font that's tiring on the eyes. (1713-68) had a marked influence on the young Tolstoy, particularly with his Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy(1768), which stands behind Tolstoy's first piece of fiction, 'A History of Yesterday' (1851), and part of which Tolstoy translated. I hope to find the time to read the recent translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. When I first saw Bondarchuk's "War and Peace," in 1968, in New York, it was presented in two parts and ran six hours. I'd remembered reading an article in The New Yorker on Constance Garnett and “Translation Wars.” I remember that the article led me to purchase the Rosemary Edmonds' translation of War and Peace. War and Peace (Война и мир). Somewhere in there Deirdre gave me the new 3.8 pound Richard Pevear / Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace that everybody is raving about. See, here's the thing they don't tell you when they tell you that War and Peace is this great book that nobody reads: War and Peace is a great book that is entirely readable. (In my last post, I introduced the strange--strange, to me anyway--use of the phrase "clerical persons" in the Unction scene in Volume 1, Book 1 of War and Peace. As one who gave up reading War and Peace twice but breezed through it the third time because it was the Pevear/Volokhonsky translation, I am delighted to hear that Turgenev is next in line! Vintage Classic, New York, 2008. All these editions of War and Peace are really starting to pile up on my shelves.
